Central Oregon Community College (COCC) recently broke ground on its Redmond campus Technology Center which is on track to achieve Platinum certification in the Earth Advantage Commercial (EAC) Certification program. The COCC Redmond Technology Center is the latest COCC building to pursue EAC certification. At the college’s Bend campus, the Jungers Culinary Center, Health Careers Center and Science Center have already received EAC Gold certifications. The Technology Center at the Redmond campus is slated for completion in April 2014.

The COCC Redmond Technology Center is a 29,500-square-foot new facility that will provide classes for manufacturing processes technology and apprenticeship/industrial technology programs. The project architect is BBT Architects of Bend, Oregon with construction carried out by Kirby Nagelhout Construction Co. The EAC Provider Firm and Sustainability Consultant for the project is Vidas Architecture, LLC. Mary Louise (ML) Vidas, principal at Vidas Architecture commented, “COCC has been a leader in bringing exemplary buildings to Central Oregon. The Redmond Technology Education Center demonstrates that Platinum certification is achievable, even in a high desert climate. The Earth Advantage Commercial system supports a truly integrated approach and produces high performing buildings without excessive costs.”

Currently the EAC program is working with twelve Provider Firms to deliver small commercial building certifications on the West Coast, with more firms coming on board by the end of 2013. 95 percent of all commercial buildings are less than 50,000 square feet – it’s a tremendously underserved market when it comes to sustainable construction certification programs. The EAC Certification program fills this gap by being a streamlined, comprehensive and cost-effective program designed specifically for small commercial buildings.
