Waste Management Continues Support of Step Up For Students and Sponsors Trip to Marlins Baseball Game for Florida Tax Credit Scholars
Miami, FL (PRWEB) September 10, 2013 -- Representatives from Waste Management (WM) donned red and white baseball caps at Friday night’s Marlins vs. Nationals game and joined four local students on the baseball diamond for a check presentation before the first pitch of the game.
But the South Florida-based WM representatives weren’t favoring the visiting team’s colors – they had another reason to wear red and white.
Waste Management is a long-time supporter of the Step Up For Students Scholarship Program, which provides K-12 scholarships for low-income Florida students, and arranged a check presentation at the game to show the company’s continuing support of the program.
The oversized cardboard check read: “$4.5 million,” which will equate to nearly 895 scholarships for the 2013-14 school year.
Since joining Step Up For Students in 2007, Waste Management has contributed more than $16 million to the program, and the company’s 2013 pledge of $4.5 million will bring the total to more than $20 million.
“At Waste Management, we are committed to making the communities where we do business better places to work and live,” said Waste Management Community Affairs Manager Dawn McCormick. “We see our involvement with Step Up For Students as an extension of that commitment, and are proud to help almost 900 Florida families find the school that best fits their child’s needs this school year.”
Step Up For Students, the nonprofit organization that administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, anticipates serving more than 60,000 low-income students across the state during the 2013-14 school year.
“We are very grateful for the leadership at Waste Management and the company’s support of equal educational opportunities for Florida’s youth,” said Doug Tuthill, president of Step Up For Students. “Waste Management’s community involvement is very impressive, and we can’t think of a better way to ensure success in a community than to make sure its future leaders are well prepared and well educated.”
Through the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, corporations with certain types of tax liabilities may redirect the tax to fund scholarships, and receive 100 percent tax credit for the contributions.
