Mercury Legal Online Join Road Safety Experts In Call For Greater Driver Safety Following 130 Vehicle Pile-up
(PRWEB UK) 9 September 2013 -- Chester-based personal injury firm Mercury Legal Online have joined the AA in calling for better lighting and speed restrictions along the Isle of Sheppey crossing following a serious crash that left eight people seriously injured and thirty-five needing hospital treatment.
The pile-up, which occurred 7:15am last Thursday (5th September), involved over 130 vehicles and closed the A249 until 5pm. Witnesses to the accident told the BBC that some motorists were driving without headlights through the thick fog(i).
Speaking to the BBC President of the AA Edmund King said: As a minimum we would like to see matrix warning signs either side of the bridge, so if there is severe weather it can advise that people should slow down."(ii)
Commenting on the accident Gavin Moat, Partner at Mercury Legal Online said: "Our latest 'Car Accidents Infographic' revealed that helping to prevent road accidents could save the UK economy over £15.6bn(iii). This includes adequate lighting and signage warning drivers of poor weather conditions, like the fog seen in this particular accident.
"It is a miracle that no-one was killed in the accident. However, for many people involved in last week's pile-up, the effects of the injuries they sustained will be felt for many years. We see a marked increase in the number of people using our compensation calculator when we have a spell of bad weather and when driving conditions are poor."
