SF Custom Chiropractic Honors National School Backpack Awareness Day By Offering Professional Services to Bay Area Students
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 09, 2013 -- To honor National School Backpack Awareness Day, celebrated on September 18, SF Custom Chiropractic will be offering their services to perform posture and scoliosis checks for San Francisco students at schools and their offices located in the Financial District and the Bernal Heights/Mission District. As the school year begins, the staff at SF Custom Chiropractic aims to help students stay healthy, focused and pain free by offering free spinal analysis and posture checks.
“Each school year brings excitement and a sense of new beginnings with new teachers, friends, books and supplies,” says Dr. Adam Jacobs, head doctor and owner of SF Custom Chiropractic. “However, what is often overlooked is the extra weight piled into students’ backpacks, which cause unnecessary stress on the spine. At a young age, it is important that the additional weight carried in backpack will not cause a negative impact on posture, which can result in permanent damage.”
The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends that students carry backpacks no heavier than 15% of their body weight. This means that a student weighing 100 pounds should carry a backpack no more than 15 pounds. Despite this, the American Chiropractic Association reports that the average child carries a backpack equivalent to a 39 pound burden for a 176 pound man or a 29 pound load for a 132 pound woman. In addition, a UC Newsroom study in 2004 reported 64% of American students aged 11-15 experienced back pain from carrying backpacks.
Back pain among students can be prevented with knowledge about proper backpack alignment, appropriate weight allowance and awareness of good posture. If detected early, posture imbalances and scoliosis can be reduced or eliminated through treatments offered at SF Custom Chiropractic. Scoliosis is often found in the adolescent years, it is very important for students to be regularly examined as chiropractic care can reverse the angle of deformity and slow progression.
For the month of September, SF Custom Chiropractic will be offering free spinal analysis and posture checks for students in the Bay Area. Chiropractic treatments and wellness evaluations will be provided to ensure students’ backs are in optimal function and movement, which will help safely distribute the weight of backpacks.
