Spartan Race Founder Attempting Record Breaking Burpee Challenge in New Jersey
Framingham, MA (PRWEB) September 07, 2013 -- Spartan Race, Inc., the world’s premier Obstacle Racing Company, is celebrating a milestone with a unique twist at the Tri-State Spartan Super planned for September 7th and 8th, at Mountain Creek in northern N.J. Spartan founder and experienced endurance challenge athlete, Joe De Sena, will attempt a burpee record to commemorate and celebrate Spartan Race reaching three million Facebook likes earlier this week. De Sena hopes to complete 10,000 burpees this weekend, live, on the Spartan Race venue grounds with cameras streaming all the action live.
Burpees, sort of a jumping jack on steroids, are infamous in the Spartan Race series, assessed as a penalty for missed obstacles to participants. With thousands of burpees handed out since Spartan Race began in 2010, it’s a fitting tribute to the three million Facebook fans.
“What better way to celebrate such a great fan base than by doing some burpees, right? We’re Spartans, after all!” said De Sena. “I thought the Tri-State course would be a perfect backdrop so that the Spartan fans can be a part of the action and watch me suffer!”
De Sena is no stranger to difficult endurance challenges. His racing resume is the stuff of legends – over 50 ultra-events overall and 12 Ironman events in one year alone. Most of his races are 100 miles or more with a few traditional marathons in the mix. De Sena once completed the Vermont 100, the Lake Placid Ironman and the Badwater Ultra in ten days. The Badwater race reaches an altitude of 8,500 feet on Mt. Whitney, and temperatures in Death Valley soar into the 120’s. Joe also biked cross-country in the Furnace Creek 508 which has been coined “The Toughest 48 Hours in Sport.”
RecordSetters.com has no record of anyone attempting 10,000 burpees in one attempt, so De Sena could be making history. “I’m taking this seriously, it’s 10,000 burpees! Thankfully, our friends at Reebok helped me come up with a strategy for staying efficient and fueled up. I’m just anxious to get started now.”
De Sena begins his burpees Friday, September 6th at midnight from the Mountain Creek Waterpark grounds. A live video feed will be viewable here – http://www.ustream.tv/channel/spartan-race-live – with an embedded version on the Spartan Race Facebook page as well. Viewers will be allowed to chat and write notes to De Sena over the course of his attempt.
