Study Referenced in Lipitor Lawsuit Reveals the Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes with High Potency Statin Drugs Such as Lipitor
LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) September 11, 2013 -- A study published on May 23, 2013 in the British Medical Journal alleges that many high-potency statins such as Lipitor may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Statins are commonly used to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease; however the study suggests a link between this class of drugs and new-onset diabetes with patients who were not previously at risk for developing diabetes. Administered by Canadian researchers, the study found that some high potency statins such as Lipitor, Zocor and Crestor pose a greater risk for developing diabetes compared to other statins such as Pravachol, which may even help prevent the onset of diabetes. The study found that the most potent statins, Lipitor and Crestor, may have the highest association with developing diabetes. Compared to those taking Pravachol, the study also found that patients who take Lipitor may face a 22 percent increased risk for developing diabetes while Crestor users may have an 18 percent increased risk for developing diabetes. The study also found that Lipitor and Zocor may differ in that both drugs may put patients at an increased risk for developing diabetes, regardless of the prescribed dose, whereas the diabetes risk of Crestor correlate more to dose and duration. (http://www.bmj.com/content/346/bmj.f2610)
“This recent study published in the British Medical Journal adds to the growing volume of research showing the link between high potency statins such as Lipitor and the development of type 2 diabetes,” said Russell Budd of Baron and Budd.
