Online divorce service MyDivorcePapers.com (MDP) reviewed recent trends in divorce and concluded that being a single mom in today’s society is more about choice than circumstances.

The trend toward personal choice can be seen clearly in a comparison of single mothers in 1960 to a recent Pew Research fact sheet that revealed, through more than 50 years of tracking, a significant drop in the number that were divorced, separated, or widowed.

According to the August fact sheet, 82 percent of single mothers in 1960 were either divorced, separated, or widowed, leaving just four percent of single mothers, who’d never been married. Fast forward to the present and the number of single mothers, who have never married is 44 percent, a staggering 40 percent increase.

Meanwhile, the amount of single mothers today, who are divorced, separated, or widowed, has tumbled 30 percentage points to 50 percent.

MDP August Study On Who Is Filing For Divorce

Not only are women exercising more choices with the decision of whether to marry when there is a child born (or to be born) outside of marriage, but they’re also more likely to pull the trigger on filing for divorce when a union goes south.

According to MDP’s own findings for August 2013, when divorce papers are filed it is more likely the wife, who initiates the action. Out of 19,426 divorce filings, the wives filed 63.82 percent of the time. Among most cases, the wife was also the top earner in the relationship by an average of close to $10,000 annually.

The MDP study shows that women today are more capable of holding their own in the workforce than they were in 1960. Also, coupled with the Pew research, a 50-year trend showing a societal shift in attitudes toward women outside the nuclear family unit is apparent. In other words, there are not only more choices for women, but there is also more acceptance shown to women, who are single mothers regardless of the reason they got that way.
