Manhattan Plastic Surgery Pros Say Smile Lipt is Old News
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 12, 2013 -- A bizarre photo attached to this Reddit discussion titled "So, there's a new plastic surgery in Asia that curls your lips" is creating overwhelming controversy over a procedure called the Smile Lipt, which surgically induces a slight smile.
"Patients are committing themselves to expressing an emotion you may not always feel," according to this article Slate article.
But is the Smile Lipt really as bad as recent articles are making it sound?
Dr. Elliot Heller and Dr. Andrew Miller of Allure Plastic Surgery in NYC don't think so.
"This bizarre photo and South Korea's obsession with plastic surgery procedures – some controversial – is shedding negative light on a procedure that's not new in theory," says Heller who also offers breast lifts and male breast reduction in Manhattan.
"One fifth of Korean women have had a surgical procedure," such as the trend-based V-line, which alters the jaw to proportions similar to those seen on anime characters in Asian cartoons, according to International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics.
But the goal behind Smile Lipt appears to be different.
People who have naturally downturned lips – genetically inherited or induced by aging – can experience heightened stress from constant accusation of frowning, according to AONE's Dr. Kwon Taek-keun. His thorough evaluations ensure that "we're restoring the original lip line," he says.
Dr. Taek-keun's motives appear in line with what the plastic surgery should be focused on; restoring or improving features that are reducing a patient's quality of life.
"I've been raising the corners of my patients' lips for years," says Miller "Although I prefer to use a dermal filler technique, I agree that the results can improve self esteem. I think Dr. Taek-keun's before and after photos reflect situations that were improved with results that look natural."
Although some plastic surgery procedures are used improperly that doesn't seem to be the case with the Smile Lipt.
