Business and Community Leaders Help End World Hunger; Cisco, Salesforce.com, Genentech Support Stop Hunger Now at the Grand Opening of Northern California Warehouse
San Leandro, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2013 -- Stop Hunger Now will celebrate its newest warehouse location, the first in Northern California, at a Grand Opening on Thursday Sept. 12, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. The event will mark the accomplishments of supporters, funders and meal packaging volunteers that helped establish Stop Hunger in Northern California and will include meal packaging demonstrations and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Stop Hunger Now Founder and International President Ray Buchanan will be on hand for the festivities along with CEO and President Rod Brooks at noon in the warehouse at 1567 Alvarado Street, San Leandro, CA. Veteran television reporter Rita Williams will emcee the Grand Opening ceremony.
“What we want everyone to know is that hunger is solvable and is the common thread among the world’s most challenging issues. When hunger is targeted, you give leverage and hope to every other cause including poverty, disease, education and the welfare of women and children,” says Rod Brooks.
In 2012, Stop Hunger Now initiated its popular and effective meal packaging program in Northern California to provide local residents a hands-on way to help end world hunger. Stop Hunger Now meal packaging events are a volunteer-based program that coordinates the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals.
In just over a year, Stop Hunger Now Northern California has packaged more than one million meals for the hungry and engaged more than 3,000 volunteers. Funders and corporate supporters such as Cisco Systems, Inc., the Salesforce.com Foundation and Genentech Inc. will be acknowledged at the Grand Opening for their part in helping to establish the new location and the launch of Stop Hunger Now Northern California.
October is World Hunger Action Month. At the Grand Opening, Stop Hunger Now Northern California will issue a challenge to the community to package 1,000,000 meals from World Food Day, Oct. 16, 2013, through December 31, 2013.
Around the world, more than 868 million people lack adequate food and more than 25,000 die each day from hunger-related illnesses. Stop Hunger Now operates meal packaging locations in 17 cities throughout the U.S. and international locations in South Africa and Malaysia. More than 300,000 volunteers from corporations, churches, schools and civic organizations have packaged more than 108,000,000 Stop Hunger Now meals since its founding in 1998.
Groups of all sizes and ages can organize a meal packaging event with Stop Hunger Now to assemble meals consisting of rice, soy, dehydrated, vegetables, and vitamins that are used to support development programs such as school feeding programs, vocational training programs, early childhood development programs, orphanages, and medical clinics. Working with these programs helps enhance lives by giving beneficiaries the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through education, skills development, and health care while also receiving much needed nutrition.
