Telematics Update: Smartphones to Revolutionize Fleet Telematics
(PRWEB) September 11, 2013 -- Viktor Bielko, fleet business unit director at Sygic, a Slovakia-based provider of GPS navigation software, says the growth in smartphone-based fleet management solutions started around 2011, when the first of Sygic’s clients began asking for Android-based navigation solutions. Now 30% to 40% of Sygic’s 300 customers are deploying their fleet solutions on smartphones and within two or three years a majority will, Bielko says.
“Companies will be pushing for as low cost as possible, and OEM producers of on board units are not able to compete with smartphones in terms of the price and in terms of the latest technology,” he says. “So I see there will be a strong move to smartphones.”
Smartphones and tablets have already carved out a niche in the independent contractor segment, where expensive tracking equipment is not practical for a contractor who might one day work for one fleet operator and the following day for another. Now they are also making inroads in the logistics sector as substitutes for enterprise digital assistants (EDAs). And local service and delivery fleets are believed to be next.
There is now a huge opportunity for telematics solution providers who haven’t traditionally been involved in the fleet space to penetrate the market, or for key players to generate even more business. Telematics Update spoke with Daimler, Volvo, TomTom and Sygic in order to write a white paper focusing on the role of these devices in the commercial space. It discusses how they can open up opportunities in small local fleets due to their low cost and combat the mixed fleet complexities through using web based platforms (available to download here: http://www.telematicsupdate.com/fleet/content5.php).
New opportunities in the fleet telematics space will be discussed in further detail at the Telematics for Fleet Management Conference USA (November 20-21, Atlanta, Georgia).
