HIPOWER Incorporates New Bi-Fuel® System to Generators, Dramatically Reduces Fuel Expense For Diesel Generator Operators
(PRWEB) September 17, 2013 -- HIPOWER SYSTEMS, a manufacturer of power-generation and power distribution equipment in the U.S. and Canada, today announced at the High Horsepower Summit in Chicago that it is partnering with Altronic, LLC to incorporate the GTI Bi-Fuel System into a HIPOWER generators ranging from 150 kw to 3MW. HIPOWER will install the systems in its standby, prime power and rental generators and can also retrofit existing engines on HIPOWER generators with the solution.
With the GTI Bi-Fuel System, diesel engines can burn a gas-diesel mixture of up to 70% natural gas, reducing fuel costs by as much as 50%. The savings are so significant that operators can recapture the cost of the add-on—and its installation—in as little as a few months. Some operators report saving $1 million per year, or more.
“The Altronic GTI Bi-Fuel System is truly amazing in its functionality," said HIPOWER SYSTEMS President Rafael Acosta. "The solution enables any diesel engine to incorporate natural gas into the fuel mixture through the air intake without making any changes to the underlying OEM equipment. Yet, due to the unique design of the system and the combustion characteristics of the air-gas mixture, engine response is typically equal to—and sometimes better than—100% diesel performance."
The Altronic GTI Bi-Fuel System is extremely valuable for drilling and other oil-field operations where natural gas is available, often as a by-product from the well-head. Not only does using the freely available well-head gas minimize fuel expense, but it also reduces or eliminates the need to flare (burn off) the gas, a practice for which the industry has received criticism. The systems also extends engine run time (in proportion to the substitution rate) and prolongs engine life, additional benefits for companies operating in remote locations.
The value of the GTI Bi-Fuel System is not limited to the oilfields, however. Any diesel operator with a source of liquid or compressed natural gas can use it to achieve considerable savings and emissions reduction. The system works by introducing the gas downstream of the engine air cleaner and upstream of the turbocharger. The air-gas mixture is compressed in the turbochar¬ger and distributed to each cylinder by the engine air-intake manifold. The lean air-gas mixture is compressed, and then ignited by the diesel injector.
"The Altronic GTI Bi-Fuel System performs superbly under a wide range of conditions, including extreme temperatures, heavy load and wide load swings," said Acosta. "A precision controller monitors engine and system parameters to ensure optimal bi-fuel usage based on load level, ambient temperature, gas supply pressure levels and other variables, and it can switch to 100% diesel instantly if necessary."
