UNCF Celebrates its 30th Anniversary of the Walk for Education, Celebrating Its 10K Fun Run at Burnham Park, Grove 7 Located on South Lake Shore Drive at 39th Street in Chicago, IL
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) September 12, 2013 -- The Chicago office of UNCF (United Negro College Fund) will step out for students at its Walk for Education on September 14, 2013 in Chicago at Burnham Park, Grove 7 located on South Lake Shore Drive at 39th Street in Chicago, IL. The event is a celebration of education that will bring together an estimated 600 community supporters to raise vitally needed funds to help students get to and through college.
“In today’s economy, students need a college education more than ever to compete and succeed, and we as a country need them to have that education,” said Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D., president and CEO, UNCF. “By investing in our students now, we are providing them with a path to success that will pay future dividends for them, for their families and communities, and for all of us.”
This year’s walk hopes to raise $200,000 which will support students in Chicago and Illinois.
Families, teachers and the community at large are invited to participate in the UNCF Walk for Education. Participants can walk, run, or bike a 10k course through South Lake Shore Drive. Members of the community are invited to support UNCF and its students by forming a Walk for Education team or registering as individuals. UNCF is encouraging everyone to register early. Early registration fees are $35 for adults and $15 for children 12 years and under.
Co-chairs for the Chicago UNCF Walk for Education are Kemper O. Powell, Vice President, Northern Trust and Jacki Robinson-Ivy, Vice President, Northern Trust. Corporate Supporters are: Northern Trust, State Farm, BMO Harris Bank, Dominick’s, Clear Channel, American Airlines, and NBC5.
“We invite everyone in the Chicago community and surrounding areas to come out and walk to support our students,” said Priscilla Stratten, UNCF Development Director. “By supporting them now, we are giving them the education and preparation they need to have successful, secure financial futures and become the next generation of college-educated professionals, good citizens and effective community leaders.”
UNCF awards 10,000 scholarships a year through 400 scholarships and other programs to students at 900 colleges and universities, including UNCF’s 37 member institutions.
