The Electric Zoo, a popular New York-based electronic music festival, was cut short this past weekend after two concertgoers overdosed on MDMA. An article “The Dangers of MDMA, or ‘Molly’ Drug,” published on AmericanAddictionCenters.com, details the short and long-term side effects of MDMA abuse.
Molly is a designer drug; designer drugs are a relatively new category of synthetic chemicals made with ingredients that are altered to skirt drug laws. Although it’s beginning to take a more mainstream turn, MDMA is still very prevalent among the dance club scene and young adults “who take the drug for its highly euphoric effects of heightened senses, warmth and lowered inhibitions.”
Lisa Sussman, LMHC and Program Manager at The Academy, a facility for the treatment and rehabilitation of adolescents ages 13-17 says, “Ecstasy alone is dangerous, but combined with other substances it takes on an entirely hazardous role with heightened risks. This combination can lead to a marked rise in body temperature (hyperthermia), which can lead to death. If someone has taken ecstasy and is having difficulty breathing or is unresponsive, seek emergency help immediately. It may save a life.”
