Last year Oakland hosted a preliminary round, this time it’s a Semi-Final of the prestigious San Francisco International Standup Comedy Competition. The top 10 from preliminaries compete in the semi-finals. The top 5 move on and the rest go home.

The San Francisco Comedy Competition is an annual, multi-week, judged, stand-up comedy contest. Over thirty comedians, out of hundreds who apply, perform in shows held in comedy clubs, bars, restaurants, casinos and theaters in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. Contestants perform 3-7 minute long sets in one of two preliminary weeks, consisting of six shows in six venues over six nights. The top five from each preliminary week will meet in the semi-finals week, which requires them to perform 8-12 minute long sets for another six shows. The top five from the semi-finals move on to the finals. In the finals, they will perform 15-20 minute long sets in five more shows and, a winner is crowned.

This is a judged contest. Each contestant will perform for a unique group of judges for every show they do. Judges score each contestant in seven categories. No other festival or TV show can claim to have discovered as many future comedy superstars as the annual San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition. The list begins with the likes of Louis C.K., Dana Carvey, Ellen DeGeneres and Robin Williams.

“Oakland, and the greater East Bay, has been very responsive to comedy in Oakland and I am hoping they come out and support this show in good numbers again. That’ll help keep the competition in Oakland every year,” says Samson, producer of Comedy Off Broadway Oakland, voted Top 10 Theatrics in East Bay in 2012. “If you look at the history of the competition you will notice some names that went on to big things in their careers. Robin Williams, Will Durst, and others have appeared in the competition. Who knows which of the current year’s comedian will become the superstar of tomorrow? You can watch them live now, and brag about it to your friends later.”

The 38th Annual San Francisco International Standup Comedy Competition Semi Finals will be held on Friday September 27th starting at 8pm at The Washington Inn, 495 10th St, Oakland. Admission is $18 online, $22 at the door. For tickets and other information visit http://coboak.ticketleap.com/38sficc/ or call (510) 214-2626.
