Sept. 26 Webinar to Provide Tips on Complying with CMS’s New Two-Midnight Rule for Inpatient Admissions
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 17, 2013 -- Effective Oct. 1, hospitals can generally count on Medicare payments for inpatients who are in a bed by midnight and remain there for more than 24 hours, according to the new 2014 inpatient prospective payment system rule finalized by CMS earlier this summer, but auditors will be on the lookout for hospitals that may game the system. “CMS’s New Two-Midnight Rule for Inpatient Admissions: Strategies for Hospital Compliance,” an upcoming Sept. 26 webinar from Atlantic Information Services, Inc. (AIS), will review the DOs and DON’Ts of CMS’s new two-midnight rule.
Webinar participants will hear from two experts in Medicare audit defense and appeals — Abby Pendleton and Jessica L. Gustafson, founding partners of health care law firm The Health Law Partners, P.C. — who will help hospital compliance teams rethink their audit defense strategies and compliance procedures in light of the new two-midnight rule.
In 60 minutes of presentations followed by 30 minutes devoted to individual questions, topics to be discussed during the webinar include:
- How does the two-midnight rule change the status quo? (What is CMS’s distinction between a two-midnight “presumption” and a “benchmark”?)
- When does the clock start ticking on an admission?
- What services can be counted toward the two-midnight threshold?
- How are RACs, MACs, the CERT contractor and other auditors likely to revamp their audits to conform to the two-midnight rule?
- What new procedures should hospitals implement to make sure they follow this new standard?
- What options are available to hospitals should they receive a denial of Part A inpatient hospital claims or identify an overpayment on audit?
- What are best practices for documentation in light of the new two-midnight rule?
- What Medicare appeals strategies should be followed to transition overpayment determinations to the new requirements?
