The musical writing team behind GoMusicals.com is kicking off the 2013-2014 theater season with new shows, new music, and new freebies, including one-acts and audition songs that students can perform royalty-free.
The company's unique approach to theatrical licensing is to tailor new musicals specifically to high school performers and market directly to drama teachers. “I get to write the parts I always wanted to play,” says Kevin Frei, who founded Go Musicals in 2007 with his partner, Leah Koestner. “With a few years of experience under our belts, we decided to double down on our dream and invest heavily in this season."
In 2012, Go Musicals welcomed a new orchestrator to the team, as well as a dedicated music engraver. Together, they have produced new musical adaptations of 'Night of the Living Dead', 'The Atomic Brain', and 'It's a Wonderful Life', as well as the original 'Kevin Frei's Post-Modern Hipster Musical (You've Probably Never Heard of It)'. In addition to the new offerings, Go Musicals recently debuted a completely updated version of their original hit, 'Final Vinyl!'
These musicals provide students with a contemporary alternative to the standard high school fare of 'Oklahoma!' and 'Guys 'n Dolls'. "We have fresh shows, the best backing tracks, and we are more flexible than the big theatrical publishers," says Frei. "We just need to let more teachers know that we exist."
Frei said he is already looking forward to their next show, a musical in the style of video games.
Go Musicals offers free perusal scripts and music, and they allow students to download and perform their one-act plays royalty-free. For more information, please visit Go Musicals’ website, GoMusicals.com.
