Naples Dentist at Cosmic Smiles for Kids Offers Tips to Avoid Cavities
Naples, Florida (PRWEB) September 18, 2013 -- Many people may not realize that even babies can develop tooth decay. That's why it is so important for parents to begin proper oral care routines for their children at a young age.
"Proper dental care for children should begin before their first tooth even appears," says Naples dentist Dr. Tamara Robison. "Teeth form in a baby's mouth during the second trimester of pregnancy, so even before they are visible, the teeth are right below the surface. That's why even as babies, parent should be cleaning their children's mouths with a clean, damp washcloth."
At a child's first visit, which should occur by their first birthday, the dentist for children will teach the child how to brush and floss properly, and also examine the teeth for any issues. The dentist may recommend fluoride treatments to strengthen the enamel of the teeth and safeguard against cavities.
"Proper dental care is an essential lesson to teach our children, to help them avoid serious issues," says Robison, who serves Marco Island pediatric patients. "Children should be visiting a pediatric dentist because we are uniquely trained to help them. We also teach proper prevention and maintenance techniques."
Around the age of two, a child is old enough to spit, so parents should begin using training toothpaste to brush two times a day. Parents should use a pea sized amount of paste and be sure the child spits it all out after brushing. Once a child has two teeth together, parents can begin flossing, as well.
Robison, and many other pediatric dentists, also focus on preventative techniques to help children avoid cavities. Not only does Robison help children understand how to properly brush and floss, she also recommends products that can build stronger teeth. She recommends xylitol products to strengthen patients' enamel, when needed.
Preventing cavities and creating beautiful smiles begins at home with the parents and caregivers. From the time their children are born, parents need to maintain proper oral health care routines to ensure their children's smiles stay bright and healthy.
