YouTube Confession Leaves Viewers Questioning

Matthew Cordle stands accused of homicide, but now he's also an internet celebrity thanks to a heart-wrenching confession video he posted to YouTube last week.

Cordle was arrested in June after allegedly driving the wrong way on the interstate and causing the car accident that cost 61-year old Vince Canzani his life, according to CNN News (09.09.2013). On Monday, a grand jury indicted Cordle on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and drunk driving.

But before those charges were even decided, Cordle shocked the world last week by releasing a full confession via YouTube. The video, which is professionally shot, shows Cordle's face and Cordle directly admits to killing Canzani. He then states that he will plead guilty.

“According to Cordle himself, the reason he did this is to convince others not to drink and drive,” said Damon, who produces videos for internet marketing powerhouse EverSpark Interactive. “But clearly, this kind of public statement will affect his trial as well.”

The video includes a movie-style soundtrack and an emotional plea for others to make better choices. That's led many commentators to claim that the video is meant to evoke sympathy from a judge or jury, Damon says.

“This confession obviously won't help him get away with it,” he said. “But assuming he does plead guilty, it could be used to ask for lenience in sentencing.”

Damon expects a flood of confession videos to follow this one, but he suggests a different motive.

“The internet has made it easier than ever to get famous,” Damon said. “For someone accused of a crime, it's a way to feel redeemed. If you can make your story inspirational, you become a hero of sorts.”
