With the Winter Travel Season fast approaching, many snowbirds are preparing to head south for the winter. While south can include a number of different places, one hot spot that is gaining popularity again is Mexico.
For those that fly to Mexico, a common problem is obtaining rental car insurance coverage for a car that they will be renting in Mexico.
In the US, coverage for a rented car can come from a couple of different places. Many credit cards provide some level of coverage, as does the renter's personal auto policy or non-owned auto coverage endorsement. Finally, there is always the option to purchase at the rental car counter.
However, there is a clear cut answer when it comes to renting a car in Mexico; the only place to purchase rental car insurance is the rental car agency itself.
Credit card coverage varies quite a bit, and while there may be some situations that may provide rental car coverage out of the states, in almost all cases the Mexico Rental Car company won't accept the coverage.
Rental Car coverage which is included on personal auto policy or non-owned auto coverage will have a territorial limitation that does not include Mexico, and in some cases will specifically exclude coverage.
That leaves one option; the rental car agency with their expensive prices.
Derek Kartchner, Vice President of Business Development for Mexpro.com stated, “The question, ‘Can your firm cover a rental car in Mexico?’ Is one of the most commonly asked questions we get this time of year. The answer is yes if it’s a US plated vehicle, but no if it’s a Mexican plated vehicle.”
Kartchner went on to explain that when renting a Mexico Registered vehicle, there is currently no solution for consumers outside of the rental car agency coverage.
Mexpro.com is a leading provider of Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance, insuring tens of thousands of US and Canadian plated vehicles that head to Mexico each year. MexPro.com does not insure Mexican Plated vehicles, including vehicles rented in Mexico.
