ID.me's Troop ID Solution Awarded Prestigious Grant to Participate in President’s National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 18, 2013 -- ID.me's Troop ID solution, the first digital authentication engine for verifying military and veteran affiliation online, has been selected for a $1.2 million grant as part of the President’s National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), with another $1.6 million anticipated in the second year of the pilot. Troop ID, a part of the ID.me identity network, currently powers military discount programs for retailers. The grant funding will be used for product development in order to empower military families to access sensitive information online from government agencies, financial institutions and health care organizations in a more privacy-enhancing, secure and efficient manner.
“We’re proud of the work Troop ID is doing and excited they’re being recognized for their verification technology, especially because it is being developed by service members for service members," said Richard Novak, USAA’s Vice President of Integrated Solutions. “The technology will help military personnel and their families access benefits they have earned while safeguarding their personal information. Copies of sensitive documents such as DD-214s will no longer need to be shared as proof of service.”
Managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), NSTIC is a White House initiative that works collaboratively with the private sector, advocacy groups, public sector agencies and other organizations to improve the privacy, security and convenience of sensitive online transactions. The NSTIC program envisions a set of interoperable technology standards, policies, and identity solutions —an "Identity Ecosystem"— where individuals and organizations can be authoritatively authenticated to increase the level of trust online. “We’re pleased to select Troop ID for a grant that will enable the military and veteran community to benefit from more privacy-enhancing, secure and convenient ways to verify their identity online,” said Jeremy Grant, senior executive advisor for Identity Management, NIST.
“Under Armour is a proud partner of Troop ID and the strides they have made to help service members access benefits online with ease and security. This well deserved recognition will not only help continue to build awareness for this great program but also allow for more innovations from Troop ID to assist retailers in providing great, accessible service to the military and their families,” said Bill Besselman, Vice President, Strategy, Under Armour.
Troop ID enables America’s service members, veterans, and their family members to verify their military affiliation online across a network of organizations that provides discounts and benefits in recognition of their service. Today, more than 200,000 veterans and service members use Troop ID to access benefits online.
“Troop ID is on the cusp of revolutionizing the way service members and veterans receive discounts from businesses, hiring preferences and credits, and even how they access their medical records,” said Glenn Schoonover, Director of Information Security and Privacy at Troop ID and the former first Chief of Network Security at the Pentagon. “With NSTIC funding, we can fulfill two Presidential directives – President Obama’s appeal to make cyberspace more secure, and President Lincoln’s charge to care for those who shall have borne the battle.”
