Park Cities Pet Sitter Inc. will be offering a 6-week Intermediate Group Dog Training Class beginning Thursday, October 17th through Thursday, November 21st, 2013. Classes will be held each Thursday during these dates at Glencoe Park in Dallas from 6:30pm-7:30pm in the evening. Glencoe Park is located at the intersection of Glencoe Street and Martel Avenue, just east of Central Expressway in Lakewood.
Up to 8 dogs total may take the class, and the fee is $150/dog for the 6-week course. Since this is an Intermediate Level Class, Park Cities Pet Sitter requests that participating dogs already be able to “sit,” “stay,” and “come when called” consistently, as well as behave with a reasonable level of calm when around new dogs and new people.
New skills that will be learned and practiced during this set of classes will include: sitting politely for petting, accepting a friendly stranger, allowing a basic physical examination and grooming, and practicing the basic commands with additional distractions, amongst others. This class was created for owners whose dogs already have a good set of basic manners, but who would like to see their dog reach the next level of dog obedience.
At the end of the 6-week course, class participants can choose whether they would like to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen® Test. The Canine Good Citizen® Test is a set of 10 skills, determined by the American Kennel Club, that demonstrate a higher level of “good dog behavior” than that exhibited by the average dog. The set of skills that a dog must be able to do in order to pass the Canine Good Citizen® Test include: accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming checks, walking on a loose lead, walking through a crowd, sitting and “down” on command, as well as staying in place, coming when called, (not) reacting to another dog, (not) reacting to distraction, and supervised separation from their handler. To learn more about the skills required to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen® class, please go to the attached link: http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm.
The Canine Good Citizen® Test will be administered on Thursday, November 21st from 7:30-8:30pm at Glencoe Park, directly after the final Intermediate Group Class. Taking the Canine Good Citizen® test is optional for the Intermediate Group Class participants. Anyone else interested in having their dog take the Canine Good Citizen® test can also choose to take the test, including dog owners and dogs that were not enrolled in the group training class. There is a fee of $15 to take the Canine Good Citizen® Test, and that fee will be paid directly to the test administrator the day of the test. If a dog passes the test, the dog’s owner can choose to order a Canine Good Citizen® official certificate directly from the AKC, for an additional fee of $8.00.
Park Cities Pet Sitter’s President, Joette White, is excited to offer both the Intermediate Group Training, as well as facilitate the testing for Canine Good Citizen® dogs. “We are striving to set the highest standard for pet services in the Dallas area.
