The international moving specialists at Interdean have welcomed the news that expats in Europe will soon be able to return to their home country for health treatment thanks to a new European Union directive which is set to be introduced next month.

EU countries have until 25th October to pass their own laws implementing the directive, which covers both public and private hospitals

It has been reported in Expat Forum that the changes are being described as “the most significant and wide ranging European health legislation in a generation.” It means that someone living overseas but faced with undue delays could return to the UK for treatment. However, it rules that patients being treated abroad will only be able to do so if there is an undue delay, as defined by clinicians, and providing that the treatment is necessary. EU countries have until 25th October to pass their own laws implementing the directive, which covers both public and private hospitals, and to make arrangements for cross border healthcare.

Whilst a patient paying for treatment abroad would be reimbursed on return to their country, it is important to note that any travel and living costs will not be reimbursed.

Offering a full range of international moving services, Interdean provides everything from excess baggage shipping to storage and insurance. Closely pursuing all industry updates and development, the latest news was of great interest to the team and a representative shares their thoughts on the matter.

“It will come as a great comfort to those who have moved or are thinking of moving overseas to know that the option of returning to their home country for health care in the right circumstances is now an option. The cross border deal applies anywhere within the free trade EEA area so we would encourage anyone unsure about their rights to look into this further. At Interdean we regularly offer advice to those looking to relocate, including country and customs information.”
