High-Yield Routines for Grades K–8, a new book that presents seven easily implemented mathematical routines, has been released by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The routines may be used effectively at a variety of grade levels and with a variety of mathematical content. The book also includes ideas for infusing mathematics into the nonmathematical routines that take time away from instruction.
“Mathematical routines are structured activities that, when used consistently, can help students gain proficiency with a range of concepts and practices,” said NCTM President Linda Gojak. “The easily implemented routines suggested in this book will provide teachers with opportunities to enhance the content knowledge and mathematical practices for all students.”
Each chapter begins with classroom vignettes that provide a glimpse of how the routine might look as it is implemented at a variety of grade levels. A description of the routine and implementation strategies follow, and the authors provide examples of student work from various grade levels for each of the routines, including examples of ways to assess student thinking by using the routines, and suggestions for adapting them.
“Consistent use of mathematical routines can yield many benefits for students,” said Ann McCoy, author of High-Yield Routines and an associate professor of mathematics education at the University of Central Missouri. “Such routines provide access to the big ideas of mathematics, allow for deepening understanding of specific concepts, and provide opportunities to develop proficiency with mathematical practices. We hope the routines we describe encourage teachers to try them with their own students and to think of creative ways to implement these and other mathematical routines.”
The book includes connections to the Standards for Mathematical Practice in the Common Core State Standards and focuses on creating opportunities for differentiated instruction.
