LMU To Recognize NISL Program Graduates with Doctoral Credit
Harrogate, Tennessee (PRWEB) September 20, 2013 -- The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Carter and Moyers School of Education will now offer 15 doctoral credit hours toward the pursuit of the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) for qualified emerging Tennessee school leaders. The hours will be awarded to candidates holding a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree and who have completed the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL) Executive Development Program for School Leaders.
Carter and Moyers School of Education Dean Michael Clyburn, Associate Dean Teresa Bicknell and Ed.D. Program Director Lynn Burger recommended the new policy to Vice President for Academic Affairs Clayton Hess. It has also been approved through LMU’s academic council. Additionally, qualified school leaders who hold an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree and have completed the NISL Program may also receive additional doctoral credit hours.
The NISL Program offers state-of-the art curriculum and instruction with the purpose of developing highly qualified school leaders throughout the nation. According to U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan, “If we collectively as a country can get great principals into all of our schools, we are going to see our children do extraordinary things.”
Across the nation, NISL consistently produces strong results. Launched in 2005, the program has 6,000 graduates and is the leading provider of rigorous training for school leaders. Former Commissioner of Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts David P. Driscoll said, “NISL’s Executive Leadership program is as high a quality program as there is. It was extremely well researched, with millions of dollars behind it. And it really focuses on a complete paradigm shift for leaders from running a building to being an instructional leader.”
The Carter and Moyers School of Education offers the Ed.D. program with concentrations in executive leadership, school leadership, curriculum and instruction, higher education and human resources development. The Ed.D. program is offered at the LMU main campus in Harrogate, Tenn., and in Knoxville in two of LMU’s Extended Learning Sites. LMU’s program was designed for working educators and is offered on a convenient schedule with low residency requirements.
“Our program leaders looked at the NISL program and saw the rigorous workload that these candidates were taking on,” Clyburn said. “We in turn looked at the curricula for our Ed.D. program and its concentrations and saw there was a close correlation between the two. It was a natural conclusion that credit should be given to candidates to our program who had completed the NISL training.”
LMU’s Carter and Moyers School of Education, with the support of Battelle for Kids and the leadership of Coordinator of School Partnerships Allen Pratt, is emerging as a regional leader in the establishment of university-school partnerships and the provision of professional development opportunities for school personnel.
