AIS’s Inside Health Insurance Exchanges Analyzes Approved Premium Rates for Health Plans Participating in Public Exchanges
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 24, 2013 -- With the Oct. 1 open enrollment date for the Affordable Care Act-mandated state-based and federally operated exchanges a week away, the most pressing question on the minds of consumers and other stakeholders is how much health insurance sold on these exchanges is going to cost. Though many states have released final, approved premium rates, some have only revealed the proposed rates, which remain subject to change. Some state exchange offerings, particularly in the federally facilitated exchanges, are still being considered by state officials and the Department of Health and Human Services. The Sept. 19, 2013, issue of Atlantic Information Services, Inc.’s (AIS) Inside Health Insurance Exchanges provides a first look at comparative rate data, featuring a table of average Silver-tier premium rates per insurance company, by state.
The average premium rate for a Silver-tier health plan being sold on the individual public exchanges is $335.20, according to AIS’s preliminary analysis of approved premium rates released in 13 states. Individual rates were compared for a nonsmoker, age 40, or the closest available rate category, averaged across all pricing regions in each state where final approved rates have been released. Additionally, a full table of average approved premium rates per company, per state, for every metallic tier, is available at http://aishealth.com/sites/all/files/premium-rates-state-exchanges.pdf. Besides the average Silver-tier rate, AIS’s analysis found an average national rate of $274.17 for Bronze plans, $395.43 for Gold and $494.32 for Platinum-tier options. This online resource will continue to be updated as states reveal their final premium rates, in order to provide stakeholders with the most accessible and up-to-date information leading up to enrollment.
More data on premium rates and all other aspects of health insurance exchanges will be published in AIS’s Health Insurance Exchange Factbook and Directory: A Guide to Implementation and Stakeholder Strategies, a new resource available in October. The CD version will feature a complete Excel workbook with specific rates per product for each state, as well as source documents with full rate information as released by states.
