Today, The Longtails, a full service marketing agency focused on fundraising strategies for the financial services industry, released “A Visual History of Marketing for Hedge Funds” infographic, which looks at the major historical milestones and strategies employed across marketing’s history. The release comes on the day the JOBS Act enables Hedge Funds in the US to market to the general public for the first time in over 80 years, through the easing of the "general solicitation" requirements spelled out under SEC Rule 506c of Regulation D.
This infographic, seen here (http://hub.am/1eB2yxe) looks back at the major modalities of marketing, from the first print materials, through TV and Radio, and finally to the digital strategies of today. Additionally, the graphic looks at how traditional outbound marketing tactics have become less valuable as the shift in digitally enabled consumers has brought a rise to inbound marketing methodologies utilizing relevant content, segmented personas, and closed-loop analytics.
“We've created a visual cheat sheet for hedge funds to catch up on the history of marketing. All the commentary we’ve been hearing around the JOBS Act was around billboards, TV, radio, and even professional sports sponsorships… nothing around utilizing big data, segmenting investor types, developing inbound tactics, and deploying closed-loop analytics,” said Head of Strategy Patrick ONeill. “Marketing has evolved tremendously in the last eighty years, it's truly become much ‘smarter’. Some hedge funds will market via billboards, but the real value will come to those using data, segmentation, and analytics to drive net new investors, cross-sell their existing investor base, and improve investor retention.”
