Very few women are aware that exposing the eyes to ordinary light when awakened during the night, shuts down the production of melatonin by the pineal gland. This lack of melatonin makes it difficult to fall asleep again after a nighttime awakening. This isn’t of much consequence for most people, but can be devastating for a new mother who may be getting up several times each night. In addition to stopping the flow of melatonin, the light also resets the internal or circadian clock. This is the clock the determines when melatonin will start flowing in the evening. If it is reset, it may mean the melatonin won’t be starting its flow at the normal time. This contributes to the difficulty in falling asleep and staying asleep. The lack of sleep and the disruption of the circadian cycle can, if continued for night after night, result in depression. Fortunately, there is an easy way to avoid this situation.
It was discovered in 2001 that not all light suppresses melatonin. It is mostly the blue rays in ordinary white light that suppress melatonin and reset the circadian clock. In 2005, physicists at John Carroll University developed light bulbs that don’t emit the damaging blue rays. They also developed eyeglasses that block blue light and filters for TV and computer screens.
