Family & Cosmetic Dentistry's Dr. G. Jan Spruill, Dentist, of Fort Collins Donates Services to Project Self-Sufficiency Participant
Fort Collins, Colo. (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- Dr. G. Jan Spruill of Family and Cosmetic Dentistry and Dr. David Way, a local orthodontist, have partnered up to give the gift of smile to a Project Self-Sufficiency (PS-S) participant.
Dr. Spruill reached out to PS-S, a local non-profit organization dedicated to helping single parents overcoming obstacles to become self-sufficient, with the idea of donating smile improving dentistry to a participant in need.
“A person’s dental health and smile have a very large impact on a person’s confidence level,” said Dr. Spruill. “We reached out to PS-S hoping that we could help a single parent find the confidence and personal presence needed to succeed in the professional world.”
The selected PS-S participant, a single mother of two children, was selected by PS-S based on performance and need to receive the pro-bono services, including both dental treatment and cosmetic dentistry. “When she got to my office, I realized that she needed comprehensive care, including individual teeth and periodontal treatment prior to treating her orthodontic needs. All of her treatment, when completed, should result in a much improved smile and all around greatly improved dental health,” said Dr. Spruill.
Dr. Spruill, who does not practice orthodontic treatment, then reached out to local orthodontist, Dr. David Way, saying, “I contacted Dr. Way and asked him if he would be willing to help me out and take this on as a pro-bono case and he agreed.”
Dr. Way agreed to join Dr. Spruill in his pro-bono treatment to the PS-S participant, offering full orthodontics along with comprehensive dental care.
“I cannot put into words how much this means to me. I have wanted to fix my smile ever since I can remember. I love to laugh and smile but hate pictures because of my ugly teeth. They are very embarrassing to me and I have always felt that my smile should reflect the joy that I feel when I laugh, and up until now it hasn’t,” said the participant. “I have worked so hard to raise my children by myself and I would love to have a new smile to continue my journey with. I do not want to be ashamed of the way I look anymore and I don’t want my children to be ashamed of how I look either.”
“Everyone at Project Self-Sufficiency is so very grateful for the dedication and generosity of Dr. G. Jan Spruill of Family and Cosmetic Dentistry and Dr. David Way, a local orthodontist. Together they are making a huge and lasting difference in this participant’s life. This is a wonderful example of how community members can get involved in a real life situation with impressive results,” said Mary Carraher, Executive Director for Project Self-Sufficiency.
The selected PS-S participant was married for eleven years and left her abusive ex-husband three years ago. “With counseling, we are overcoming the trauma that we have encountered and I am attending school at Front Range Community College where I have a 4.0 GPA. I will be starting my second year this fall,” said the participant. She will receive her Associates of Arts in May of 2014, before attending Colorado State University to earn a Bachelor’s and then her Master’s. “My goal is to become an Advocate for Victims of Domestic Violence. I want to work in the DA's office and change the many laws that need to be changed where DV is concerned. I want to give hope to those who feel that there is none. I want to take my experience and turn it into a positive one.”
