As reported by HealthDay (9/12), in People's Beliefs on Drunk Driving May Change When They're Drunk, a new study conducted at the University of Missouri, suggests that people who feel it's wrong to drink and drive may change their beliefs when they're intoxicated themselves.
When conducting the study, researchers compared the attitudes and willingness to drive drunk of 82 adults on two separate occasions: when they were sober and after drinking moderate amounts of alcohol. The results of the study, which was published online September 12 in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, surprised study author Denis McCarthy, an associate professor of psychological sciences.
"We all probably know people who make good decisions about lots of things when they're sober, but put four or five beers in them and they make bad ones. So that part wasn't surprising. I was surprised, however, that it was such a big effect over and above their sober beliefs," McCarthy said.
Each year, about one in three fatal vehicle accidents is caused by a drunk driver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that meant more than 10,000 traffic deaths were alcohol related.
