As students return to schools, colleges and universities across the nation, nutrition supplement leader Brilliant Nutrition wants to make sure youth are fit for the classroom and today announced a new series that will explore and offer practical solutions to key nutritional and wellness considerations for American youth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most U.S. youth: do not meet recommendations for amount of fruits and vegetables to be consumed each day; do not eat the minimum recommended amounts of whole grains each day; eat more than the recommended daily intake of sodium; and get 40% of daily calories from added sugars and solid fats (empty calories) significantly affecting the overall quality of their diets.

Brilliant Nutrition, the leader in mineral-based nutrition solutions, believes that the nutrition or lack thereof of the next generation is a critical conversation that needs to be had—now.

“Wellness considerations for our youth should never be lost in the shuffle of politics, business, finances or weather,” said Lisa Barney, founder of Brilliant Nutrition. “The well-being and preparedness of our children is a topic that must remain a constant for all parents, educators and guardians.”

With school recently back in session for children across the country, Part I of the nutrition series looks at how students are entering the classroom physically unprepared. According to the CDC, a healthy breakfast is associated with improved cognitive function (especially memory), reduced absenteeism, and improved mood.

In “The School Daze,” Barney digs into how poor diets, lack of sleep and increasingly inactive lifestyles have resulted in students’ energy imbalance/ falling into a ‘dazed state’ in the classroom—and what parents and children can do about it.
