National Fire Sprinkler Association Observes National Fire Prevention Week; October 6-12, 2013 Marks Annual Public Awareness Campaign on the Dangers of Fire
Patterson, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2013 -- The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), the longest-tenured fire sprinkler advocacy organization in the U.S., recognizes October 6-12, 2013 as National Fire Prevention Week. National Fire Prevention Week is an annual public awareness campaign to promote fire safety throughout the U.S. This year’s theme, “Prevent Kitchen Fires,” focuses on educating the public on the importance of fire prevention in the kitchen and how to prevent cooking fires. Kitchen fires are the leading origin of home fires in the United States.
Created and sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the goal of National Fire Prevention Week is to educate families on what causes home fires, how to prevent them, and what to do in an emergency situation. The NFPA has been the official sponsor of this campaign since 1922, making it the longest running public health and safety observance on record.
“National Fire Prevention Week is a time when we put the dangers of fire and the importance of prevention at the forefront of our minds with the hopes that through education and awareness we can potentially save lives from the ravages of fire,” said Russell Fleming, President of the NFSA. “While no one can predict a fire, families, especially with young children or loved ones who are elderly or disabled, can work to prevent and prepare for them. I urge the public to learn more about the life saving capabilities of smoke detectors and residential fire sprinkler systems and how they play a key role in keeping residents and first responders safe. I encourage everyone to take the time to educate themselves on how to prevent home fires and protect their families from the dangers of fire.”
In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, NFSA is hosting a variety of events and training courses to educate the public and fire officials across the country on the benefits of residential fire sprinkler systems. Additionally, the NFSA would like to provide the following fire safety tips for families:
• Do not throw water on grease fires; instead, smother them or use baking soda.
• Keep a fire extinguisher in the pantry or underneath the sink in the kitchen.
• Do not walk away from anything cooking on the stove or in the oven.
• Keep potholders and towels away from the stove and oven while you are cooking.
• Do not hang any flammable fabrics from the handle of your oven.
• Install smoke detectors in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and check the batteries often.
• Make an escape plan and practice it twice a year.
• Once you’re out, stay out! Do not re-enter a burning building.
• Install a residential fire sprinkler system in your home.
