Study: Today's Music Lyrics Influence Skyrocketing Alcohol Abuse
Miami, Florida (PRWEB) September 30, 2013 -- As reported by HealthDay (8/30), in the news article, [Alcohol Dominates in Pop Music Lyrics: Study, many of today's music buyers are influenced by the lyrics mentioning alcohol and drinking. In many instances, songs are portraying excessive drinking as as a fun while mentioning some alcohol brands by name.
The researchers said that music tends to serve as a major influential force on young people who listen to it an average of 2.5 hours a day.
Study co-author David Jernigan, director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said,"Given the heavy exposure of youth to popular music, these results suggest popular music may serve as a major source of promotion of alcohol use among youth."
Researchers from Johns Hopkins and Boston University School of Public Health examined 720 songs for mentions of alcohol and alcohol brand names. The study was based on an analysis of lyrics from hits on Billboard's most popular song list for 2009, 2010 and 2011.
