Early Vaccination Recommended by CDC Following One of the Worst Flu Seasons in a Decade Medspring Offering $19 Flu Shots
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- According to the CDC, last year’s flu season was one of the worst in nearly ten years, forcing hospitals across Chicago to turn away hundreds of patients suffering from the flu due to facility overcrowding. To reduce the likelihood of experiencing a similar outbreak, the CDC recommends that people ages six months and older receive flu shots.
“Last year’s influenza season in Chicago was a reminder of just how serious the flu can be,” said MedSpring’s Chief Medical Officer Jon L. Belsher, M.D. “The flu virus is extremely contagious, so if one person catches it, there’s a good chance others at his or her home, work or school will be infected as well. Vaccination significantly reduces an individual’s risk of contracting the flu.”
The flu typically spreads from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Since it takes about two weeks for antibodies from the vaccine to develop in an individual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting vaccinated as early as possible.
The flu vaccine protects against the influenza strains that the CDC has predicted will be most common this season. Because new flu strains emerge every year, the flu vaccine is updated annually. MedSpring also carries preservative-free shots.
“It’s in the best interest of public health to make flu vaccines easily accessible and affordable to the general public, so we’re pleased to offer flu shots for just $19,” added Belsher. “Vaccines are now available at MedSpring’s Naperville, Arlington Heights and Lakeview locations, and walk-ins are welcome.”
MedSpring patients enjoy a distinctive and relaxing atmosphere with unique amenities including complimentary snacks and beverages, in-room televisions and activities for children. Following their visit, patients rate MedSpring 4.9 out of 5 stars.
