New York Workers’ Compensation Lawyer Adnan Munawar Weighs-in on Federal Workers’ Compensation Penalty
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2013 -- The Insurance Journal recently reported that the federal government levied a fine on Piramal Glass USA Inc. for committing 21 health violations (Worker Finger Amputation Leads to $137K in Fines for Missouri Glass Plant, 9/20/2013). The United States Office Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) pursued the fine against the Missouri manufacturing plant after a worker lost a finger while repairing a machine.
The article stated that “Thirteen of the serious violations were safety-related, including a lack of e-stop devices on lathes, grinding, drilling and milling machines; failing to equip a lathe with a foot-operated guarding device; and unguarded floor holes and missing railings.” Other violations included failing to perform audits, exposing workers to illegal volumes of noise without proper ear protection, and not shielding workers from excessive heat.
Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP, released a statement today condemning the lack of safety precautions by Piramal Glass and lauding the federal government for taking a stand for workers’ health and well being. “When a company not only fails, but repeatedly refuses to protect its workers, it is putting its employees at serious risk and OSHA made it clear today that such violations will not be tolerated. It is a service to employees that a federal agency is monitoring companies’ compliance with safety standards and is penalizing companies who do not fulfill their responsibilities.”
Mr Munawar also explained that while the OSHA penalty was a victory for workers, it would not by itself ensure that the injured worker who lost a finger would receive the compensation to which he would be entitled. “It is important that victims of workplace accidents are informed of their rights under state law and that they seriously consider seeking out legal assistance to file their claims. Pursuing a workers’ compensation claim can be tedious and a lawyer can help you navigate the system and stand up to the insurance companies if they fight against your claim. The lawyers at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP are experienced in helping victims of workplace accidents and are passionate about achieving the best possible results for their clients.”
