ZyDoc Chairman James Maisel, MD to Present “An NIH-Funded Study on the Value of Dictation for EHR Usability and Documentation Quality” at Strata Rx Conference
Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- James Maisel, MD, Chairman of ZyDoc, an Islandia, NY-based medical informatics company, will present “An NIH-Funded Study on the Value of Dictation for EHR Usability and Documentation Quality” at the 2013 O’Reilly Strata Rx Conference in Boston on Friday, September 27. Dr. Maisel, who is Principal Investigator for the project, will describe methodologies and results of an NIH grant-funded study comparing the documentation quality, efficiency, and user satisfaction for a method of EHR data capture involving ZyDoc’s MediSapien™ NLP (natural language processing) against results from standard methods.
ZyDoc received Phase I SBIR grant funding by the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health for the study entitled “Applying NLP to Free Text as an EHR Data Capture Method to Improve EHR Usability,” which involves ZyDoc’s NLP-powered MediSapien™ knowledge management platform. ZyDoc was among only 16% of NLM grant applicants to be awarded funding in 2011. The $150,000 project is funded entirely from the grant and is a potential precursor to Phase II funding.
According to Maisel, “Physicians often bypass structured entry in EHRs because of usability issues. Our study focused on nephrologists, cardiologists, and neurologists in teaching hospital environments to learn whether the MediSapien dictation-based method of data capture utilizing NLP would reduce documentation time, improve documentation quality (completeness), and improve usability. The test results indicate that the MediSapien entry method can save 60% of physician documentation time compared to direct EHR entry.”
Maisel, a retinal specialist, recently presented research on “Using Unstructured Data Sources for Analytics in a Retinal Practice,” as an educational poster at the 2013 American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) in Toronto; and will present two NLP-related talks at the upcoming Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 99th Annual Meeting in Chicago.
