Stantec-designed Confederation Bridge Honoured with FIDIC Centenary Award

Stantec is pleased to announce the recognition of the Confederation Bridge by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) with an Award of Excellence for a major civil engineering project of the last 100 years.

The award was presented to Stantec and AECOM at FIDIC’s annual conference in Barcelona where the most significant feats of engineering of the past century, from around the world, were recognized.

FIDIC is a leading global federation that has spent the last 100 years driving the development and application of international engineering standards based upon core principles of Quality, Integrity and Sustainability. The FIDIC centenary awards were given on the basis of a project’s international recognition, technical excellence, innovation, and sustainability.

“This honor demonstrates the caliber of Canadian consulting engineering expertise and innovation, and highlights the contributions of consulting engineering to our social, economic and environmental quality of life,” says John Gamble, President of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies–Canada, who was in attendance at the FIDIC meetings in Barcelona. “Congratulations to Stantec and AECOM and all those who contributed to making this project a success.”

The Confederation Bridge fulfills the historic promise made by the Government of Canada to Prince Edward Island in 1873 to promote continuous and efficient year-round transportation for people, goods, and services between the island and the mainland. It’s the longest bridge in the world to cross ice-covered waters and was the first of its kind to use high-precision GPS technology—paving the way for future feats of engineering.

The 13-kilometre Confederation Bridge stretches across the Northumberland Strait and incorporates proven technology with state-of-the-art materials to meet the demands of a fast-track design-build process. The process, which began in 1987 and concluded in May 1997, required innovative approaches in procedural as well as structural design. Designers needed to demonstrate to the international financial community that the bridge could provide a cost-effective, low-maintenance, all-weather fixed link with the mainland throughout the 21st century, replacing a ferry service operating between the two provinces since the late 1800s.

The design team’s attention to design details allowed construction to proceed from site preparation through to completion in under four years, despite the massive scale of the project and the weather-imposed winter shutdowns.
