Ocean Tomo Announces Monthly Report on Patent Quality -- Take 5: On Patents

This monthly report driven by insight harnessed from the Ocean Tomo Ratings™ System provides an overview of patent issuance activity within the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) revealing the previous months:

The Top 5 utility patents issued in August are ranked based on OTR™ Score. The OTR Score objectively rates patent assets based on a proven statistical methodology. The OTR score has a median of 100. As a person’s credit score is used by banks and lenders to determine financial risk, a patent assets’ OTR Score is used by intellectual property professionals, investors and corporate strategic planners to determine quality. OTR scores are unique to each patent examined and are updated monthly.
The top patent issued in the month of August is assigned to Digimarc Corporation, a company that specializes in digital watermarking technology allowing computers to interact and respond to objects in the world.
Samsung led all companies for the month with 609 patents issued and over 100 patents issued to its subsidiary Samsung Display. The highest rated Samsung patent involves a thin film transistor fabrication technology.
The top five patented inventors are ranked by number of patents issued. Among these inventors, Jay Walker has the highest average OTR score for his issued patents with a score of 152, and the second highest scoring individual patent at 216. Walker’s ‘174 patent discloses a system for posting information, such as an item auction on a website.
The most actively patented class in August was the USPC 370 class, a generic class for multiplexing and duplexing communications systems. The highest rated patent in the 370 class is Broadcom’s ‘260 patent, which relates to a system that is capable of operating in multiple communication networks.
The top five patent prosecuting firms are ranked by number of patents issued in the month. While Fish & Richardson did not issue the largest number of patents, they were engaged in the issuance of the highest rated patents of the top five firms by earning the highest average OTR™ score.
