Dick Stanley Retires from Stanley Consultants
Muscatine, IA (PRWEB) September 30, 2013 -- After 58 years of service to Stanley Consultants, Chair Emeritus Dick Stanley retired from the company on June 30. Currently celebrating its 100th anniversary, Stanley Consultants provides program management, planning, engineering, environmental and construction services worldwide. Mr. Stanley is a professional engineer, businessman, and world citizen. He continues active as Chair of The Stanley Foundation, a private operating foundation that advances multilateral action to create fair, just, and lasting solutions to critical issues of peace and security. He is retired Vice Chair of the Board of HNI Corporation, a Fortune 1000 manufacturer and marketer of office furniture and hearth products and has served on numerous for-profit and nonprofit boards.
Mr. Stanley was first introduced to Stanley Consultants and the engineering profession in the mid-‘40s by his father, the late C. Maxwell Stanley, working as an office boy on weekends. In those days, the tools of consulting engineering practice included slide rules, blueprints, carbon paper, mimeograph machines, and adding machines. After high school graduation, Mr. Stanley went on to earn B.S. degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University (ISU) and later received his M.S. in Sanitary Engineering from the University of Iowa.
After graduating from ISU in 1955, Mr. Stanley joined Stanley Consultants as an engineer-in-training and devoted his entire professional career to the company. Over the years he gathered broad professional experience in general management, project management, quality management, design, studies and reports.
He held several management roles prior to being elected Executive Vice President in 1967. He was elected President in 1971 and served as Chairman from 1984 until 2007, when he became Chair Emeritus. Stanley Consultants prospered under Mr. Stanley’s leadership, becoming highly respected and ranked among the largest in the world. The company has served clients in all 50 U.S. states and in more than 100 other countries. As it grew, its reputation for client service, quality work, high ethics and integrity also grew.
Throughout his career, Mr. Stanley was instrumental in strengthening consulting engineering practice by serving on numerous boards and professional organizations, prominent among which were Chairman of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC); President of the Iowa Engineering Society; and Chair of the National Construction Industry Council.
Mr. Stanley has been honored with many awards, most notably the Distinguished Award of Merit of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC); the Hoover Medal by the Hoover Medal Board of Award; the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) Award, its highest recognition; the Harry S. Truman Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Community Colleges; the Herbert Hoover Centennial and Distinguished Service Awards from the Iowa Engineering Society; the Award for Citizen Diplomacy from the National Council for International Visitors; the Marston Medal and Distinguished Alumni Award from Iowa State University; and the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Iowa Alumni Association.
He has been a frequent chair, presenter, and participant at conferences on world affairs and global issues. He has authored numerous articles and papers published in professional and technical journals and presented at professional and technical meetings. Mr. Stanley is active in varied church, community, and civic activities. He was the first President of the Eastern Iowa Community College Board and founding Chair of Unity HealthCare. He is an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church; past President of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce; past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Northeast-Midwest Institute; and President of the Muscatine Health Support Foundation.
