Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s “Don Jon” Spotlights the Health Problems with Porn
(PRWEB) September 28, 2013 -- The movie “Don Jon,” written, directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is the story of a porn-addicted New Jersey lothario.
While the trailer suggests a light-hearted relationship romp, porn addiction is considered by some to be a serious problem with debilitating physical and psychological effects for many men. PEGym.com, a community devoted to improving the sexual health of men, has seen significant growth in the number of men claiming to be addicted to porn over the past five years.
“A whole new generation of men have grown up with free, ubiquitous access to online porn, and the addiction levels, as well as their negative effects, have skyrocketed,” said AJ Alfaro a Male Sexual Health Coach at PEGym.com.
While the societal acceptance of porn is often debated, less talked about are the conditional side effects of online porn addiction. Many men have become addicted to porn in such an unhealthy way that they are unable to function in real sexual scenarios.
“The effects of over-masturbation to porn are often an inability to perform outside of having porn as a stimulus (erectile dysfunction), coupled with premature ejaculations as many men masturbate to porn in a furtive, hurried manner,” said Alfaro.
It’s also been shown that a form of “hypersexualization” can take place when a person becomes addicted to porn. Addicted men can come to view the scenarios in porn as normal. This applies to their sexual expectations from women and from themselves. This hypersexualization, without taking into account other important emotional aspects of what normally constitutes a healthy relationship, can cause an extremely warped and harmful view of reality.
One of the members at the PEGym.com openly compained to the community, “Over the years I have developed an incredible addiction to porn. I really can't go for even a couple days without watching it. It's hard for me to get an erection, and I can't get a full one, without pornography.” Forum members responded with advice and support in what has become a common occurrence.
The advice generally focuses on encouraging men who feel they have a porn problem to lessen their consumption, first by limiting themselves to a certain number of views each week. Other steps include masturbating in a relaxing, meditative manner and not focusing on just “getting off.”
The challenge of breaking the porn addiction is a formidable one. In “Don Jon” the Gordon-Levitt character’s porn habit is altered by his girlfriend, played by Scarlett Johansson. Many addicts either are lacking a similar support system or are too embarrassed to share their issues.
“Porn can be a barrier to men becoming a ‘Don Juan,’ but it doesn’t have to be. The tools and guidance to address these issues exist,” said PEGym.com spokesperson Ethan Maxwell. “The initial step is to admit the problem and seek out solutions without embarrassment.”
