Unblock Websites Proxy Jailbreaks Regionalization of the Internet
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) September 29, 2013 -- In response to the growing number of country-blocked YouTube videos, tweets and web services, idcloak launches a simple online tool that reroutes users’ browsing to a new global location. The Unblock Websites Proxy cleverly strips the IP address from the user’s web requests and replaces it with one from a user-specified server. The user has a choice of entering the internet via the US, UK or Japan.
Websites that are normally unavailable in the user’s actual location then become available.
“I don’t think anyone ever wanted the internet to become a regional medium,” says idcloak’s senior researcher, Robin Welles, “but that’s what is happening. Although there is value in seeing location-determined search results and news reports, it’s wrong to deny us an easy way out of this regionalization.”
On the causes of web regionalization, Welles points to one overarching factor, “As you would expect, the regional walls went up because of financial incentives. Advertising has more value if it is delivered by region, and profit is maximized if different prices are offered to site visitors from different nations.”
Welles proposes that the effects of web regionalization go beyond the blocking of videos, tweets or services. “Any choice of what to show a visitor to your site has an intrinsic flipside: the choice of what you do not show them. Blocked pages aside, there are political and social implications in displaying content based on user location and history.”
The free unblocking technology allows users to explore the web internationally by accessing sites from alternate locations. In addition to the three country locations currently available, two more – in Germany and Australia – will soon be added.
The release comes just days before a paid proxy service takes international web access to a new level. “Our international VPN network is software-based and supports all internet programs, not just browsers. Users will soon have complete and simple control over where they connect to the internet from.”
