Online Students Experience a Different Type of Back-to-School
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) August 28, 2013 -- While Arizona families are hitting the stores for back-to-school supplies and clothes, 14-year-old Arizona Virtual Academy (AZVA) student, Jacee Frivaldo, waits for her UPS package of school supplies to arrive before the long-distance swimmer with Olympic goals heads to the Catalina Channel to compete. Among the things that’ll go with her: teachers, coursework and assignments —all available on her PC.
Not only is Jacee a part of the youngest relay team in history to swim the 22-mile Catalina Channel, but also she’s among a growing population of students who go to online public school for a more individualized approach to education and flexible schedule.
“Jacee is beyond excited to go back to school and continue to compete nationally,” said Jacee’s mom, Carol Frivaldo. “She really loves the teachers and classes at AZVA. It’s great that we can remain focused on the most important thing – an excellent education– while still pursuing competitive swimming.”
As part of the Arizona public school system, AZVA is tuition-free and serves students in grades K through 12. AZVA and other online public schools offer parents and students a choice. Whether students need flexible scheduling, like Jacee, or a more customized pace, such as advanced learners or students with learning disabilities, AZVA can meet those needs.
Like most kids, Jacee’s needs are unique. When she was 13-years-old, she had already started high school courses at AZVA. This fall, she’s planning to take more college courses through a partnership with AZVA and area universities.
“Some classes and subjects, I’m really great at. And other classes, I need more help. Luckily, I have teachers who are available day or night to answer questions and I have my mom who is also my ‘learning coach’ and keeps me on track,” said Jacee. “I’ve been able to pursue my passion, get ahead in school and also get more attention and support because of AZVA.”
AZVA students conduct class and coursework online and communicate with teachers daily. Students still have normal assignments, tests and grades and participate in extracurricular and social activities like other public school students.
