July Events for Adults and Kids Outside of DC - Theater, BBQ Festival, Olympic Water-sport Event and more
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (PRWEB) July 17, 2013 -- July is the summer month in the valley when one really understands what hot is. With temperatures reaching the 90‘s and Virginia-West Virginia’s wonderful southern humidity one has two choices - stay inside in the cool air-conditioning or brave the hot outdoors by looking for fun events. Here is a list of July’s fun schedule of events for adults and kids just a tankful outside of DC.
Culinary Happenings and Events outside of DC
A U Pick Farm is the best way to get the freshest fruits and vegetables straight off the vine and is a great place to find locally grown crops. Ever heard of Brambles? Lori MacKintosh of MacKintosh Fruit Farm said, “A Bramble is any rough (usually wild) tangled prickly shrub, specifically a blackberry or raspberry bush, or any hybrid of similar appearance, with thorny stems.”
The Bluemont BBQ Bash begins on Friday, July 26th with a meet and greet at Bluemont Vineyard. All the KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) competitors will be there. Last year's Bluemont winner "3 EYZ BBQ" won the national KCBS competition and is back to claim the crown again. On Saturday, the People's Choice Competition is a bit more lighthearted than the actual competetion and will benefit the Boulder Crest Retreat for wounded warriors. VIP and guests have the opportunity to enjoy 5 samples of BBQ and rank their favorite to award the People’s Choice Crown. This year's 'amateurs' can bring the grills in on Sunday the 28th and compete in the Backyard BBQ Competition. Those interested can get tickets here.
Theater in the Valley -
The Contemporary American Theater Festival produces new American theatre and is only for the month of July beginning on the 5th and ending on the 28th. Contemporary themed subject manner, this is an adult only theater festival. There is a five play repertory and features three world premieres. Pick a favorite or for the dye heart contemporary-theme enthusiast buy the package and see all five plays.
Shenandoah Summer Music Theater opened in June and runs until August 4th. The last two musicals are Crazy About You July 10 - July 21st and just for the young ones here in the Shenandoah Valley, Shrek The Musical from July 24th to August 4th.
Outdoor Recreation -
There is no better way to cool off than to visit Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. From water tubing, white water kayaking, flat water kayaking, zip-lining and much more. Fun for the entire family.
On July 20th, the second annual Olympic Tubing Event occurs on the Shenandoah River in West Virginia. For $45, one can do The Tube Roll, Tube Discus, Tube Stack, Tube Carry and Tube Race. Tube-tastic Prizes include $100 Cash Prize, Deluxe Adventure Package, FREE trips.
Kid’s Bucket List July Event -
Save the Butterfly Event at Great Country Farms for butterfly Lovers & Girl Scouts! Spread the word to help save the Monarch's. Join GCF on July 20th for the very first Butterfly Harvest to learn all about how one can to help these magical creatures build their population. Girl Scouts also get the chance to design a Butterfly Patch and the winner will be announce during the Harvest. Co-sponsors of the event is Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and the Girl Scouts Nation's Capital.
