NAPW honors Shellie Torres as a 2013/2014 Professional Woman of the Year for leadership in construction management with this prestigious distinction. As the largest, most-recognized organization of women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 400 Local Chapters.
“My work deals with numbers and to make sure our numbers in this organization are accurate. We have an accounting firm who certifies and puts the financial statements together, but if our in-house records are incorrect, I’m held responsible,” says Ms.Torres of her role as chief financial officer at the family-owned construction company U.T. Company LLC.
U.T. Company specializes in new construction, HVAC and plumbing. Ms. Torres has been with the company since the beginning and has steadily climbed the corporate ladder. Starting as an office clerk, Ms. Torres demonstrated an ability to work independently. She had an aptitude for numbers and accurate record keeping and maintained a positive work ethic, always staying true to the high standards she set for herself. Those attributes were recognized and valued and so Ms. Torres was given more and more responsibilities.
Now, as the chief financial officer, Ms. Torres oversees all of the company’s financial transactions, manages staff and interacts with outside auditors. Working in a male-dominated field has had its challenges, but Ms. Torres always persevered. She has carved out a successful career in an industry she admires. “We women in the construction industry need to work twice as hard, but also love what we do!” she says.
