Kansas Adults Get ‘Back To School’ in New Diploma2Degree Program
Kansas (PRWEB) September 04, 2013 -- Students all over Kansas are getting back into the routine of the school year. And for some adult students, getting ‘back to school’ has been a long time coming. Diploma2Degree, a new virtual charter school for adults, is welcoming into its online classrooms many adults who left school years ago and are looking for a second chance to earn their high school diploma.
Diploma 2 Degree is a public charter school in Kansas. That means it’s free to any adult, 21 and over, who lives anywhere in Kansas and does not yet have a high school diploma. Classes are 100% online, so all a person needs is a computer with Internet access. Spaces are still available and applications will be accepted through September 15 for this school year.
“We have had such a wide range of students enroll in the program so far,” says Diploma2Degree Admissions Counselor Melissa Rollins. “From 21 year olds to 58 year olds. And everyone is at least a little nervous about taking classes again after being away from school. But that’s exactly what this program was designed for--people who need plenty of support and help easing back in to school.”
One Diploma2Degree student explained his reason for enrolling in the program: “I'm 41 years old and I know I messed up a lot when I was young and had gotten into some trouble then and didn't finish my high school education, and I've done everything to just get by in life and now that I watch my daughter grow up and see the possibilities out there for her that maybe I should be at least willing to finish my education and find my way out of working so hard for so little and work smarter not harder so to speak.”
Diploma2Degree uses a self-paced, mastery curriculum provided by CompuHigh, an online high school that has specialized in mastery learning since 1994. In mastery learning, students stay with a lesson and revise their work until they get it right. There are no deadlines for submitting a lesson. Each student works at a pace that allows them to really learn and submit their work whenever they are ready to. A certified teacher, specializing in Mastery Online Education, answers each lesson of each student giving them feedback to help them revise the lessons to a mastery level.
“Our Diploma2Degree students are off to a great start in their classes,” says Jeannette Geib, the Educational Director at CompuHigh. “Many student have confided in their teachers about how insecure they are in their academic abilities, but they are actually doing quite well. Students have expressed how their lives and their children have given them a new perspective on education that they did not have as teenagers. Our self-paced, mastery curriculum gives them the time and space to learn, but I think it is their difference in perspective that really will lead to their success. I can’t express how much I admire these students for their courage to try again.”
Diploma2Degree a collaboration among Lyons USD 405, eduKan, Pratt Community College, and CompuHigh. Adults who live in Kansas, are 21 or older, and do not have an high school diploma can still enroll.
