Dr. Michael P. Gabriel, Founder of Gabriel Pediatrics, Comments on the Emerging Partnerships Between Pediatricians and Reading Advocates in Order to Increase Literacy
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 02, 2014 -- Dr. Michael Gabriel, Founder of Gabriel Pediatrics, responds to a December 17th article published by Triangle Business Journal, that discusses how pediatricians and reading advocates are teaming together to increase literacy.
According to the December 17th article published by Triangle Business Journal titled “Reading advocates work with pediatricians to increase literacy,” reading advocacy groups like Reach Out and Read are partnering with pediatricians in order to integrate literacy portions into regular checkups, starting for those who are as young as six months.
These partnerships are being forged after the alarming numbers on childhood literacy that have been brought to national attention. Estimates in North Carolina show that “two-thirds of children entering the fourth grade are below proficient reading levels.” Many reading advocates believe those numbers could continue to get worse as the number of continued cuts to education spending increase.
Dr. Michael Gabriel, founder of Gabriel Pediatrics, says incorporating literacy portions into regular checkups, could be a great way to instill the importance of literacy knowledge at a young age. “Unfortunately, mandated school budget cuts are giving school districts no choice but to do away with various important education programs that are leaving today’s youth at a disadvantage when it comes to literacy and comprehension,” he says. “Thankfully, pediatricians can provide the resources that these children need in order to obtain the literacy skills required to be prepared for their futures. These fostering partnerships between reading advocates and pediatric practices will prove to be very helpful in getting our youths’ literacy levels to where they need to be.”
