Flavor Your Life, a European Union funded campaign dedicated to providing the latest in olive oil industry news, discusses how the increasingly popular Mediterranean diet and extra virgin olive oil can benefit health and in bringing flavor to meals.

The use of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet is a staple in the culinary traditions of Southern Italy. According to Ancel Keys, a retired American nutritionist, olive oil is essential to use it in the preparation of any dish. About 50 years ago, Keys discovered that the health secret of the Italian population was linked to the exclusive consumption of extra virgin olive oil, cereals, legumes, fruit & vegetables, fish and little meat, but no animal fats. Thus generating global interested in one of the healthiest diets, the Mediterranean diet.

The Mediterranean diet is based on the consumption of vegetables, fruit, nuts, and olive oil. Fish and chicken are allowed twice a week, and fatty meats like beef are only allowed once at most per week. The Mediterranean diet replaces saturated fats, or animal fats, with healthy fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats are often the culprits of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and can clog arteries. However, these healthy unsaturated fats found in nuts, fish, and legumes promote heart and brain health. Olive oil in particular is a super food because of its unsaturated fats, antioxidants, and oleic acid.

In recent years, the ‘Mediterranean diet’ and the consumption of olive oil has spread around the world because of its beneficial effects on health. Extra virgin olive oil is also popular due to its health benefits, but also because of its contribution to dishes creating rich flavor. When olive oil is substituted with different oils, such as vegetable oil, the dish loses its aromas and its taste.
