Sara Cardinale, Special Events Coordinator for the ACVB, explains: “The lineup this year has generated quite the buzz, and highlights Abingdon as an up-and-coming music destination.” The second weekend of the series includes two music legends on stage, and will bring some great energy on stage. Weekend passes are available at the Barter Theatre Box Office. There’s something for every music lover in this concert series, the second weekend’s schedule is as follows:
John Cowan with Mountain Heart-January 17th
John Cowan, also known as the Voice of Newgrass, has been singing his heart out for thirty-five years now, and his soaring vocals have only improved with time. A true innovator, John applies his powerful pipes to genres from country, bluegrass, and gospel to soul, jazz, and rock-and-roll – often within the space of a single concert. His ability to move fluidly through multiple styles, and carry mesmerized audiences on the journey with him, has set him apart as one of the most loved and admired vocal artists of his generation, not just by fans and critics but among fellow musicians as well. Together with Mountain Heart, they’ve been described as bringing a new, edgier, more rock-inflected sound.
Mountain Heart is a Grammy award winning band which combines elements of rock, jam band, country, blues, jazz, folk and bluegrass music into a high-energy sound. Critics now describe the band using terms such as “acoustic overdrive”, “Folk rock on steroids”, and “slam grass”.
Marty Stuart & The Fabulous Superaltives-January 18th
Marty Stuart is a country music legend and five time GRAMMY-winner. Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart, 54, has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music with a missionary’s zeal. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ’70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band during the ’80s and chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ’90s. He brings to the Barter stage his core — foot-stompin’, tail-shakin’, honky tonkin’, rockin’ hillbilly music. His latest musical oeuvre is ably supported by the coolest cats in Nashville – his backing band, The Fabulous Superlatives: guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson, and bassist Paul Martin.
Lost River Cavemen open for Marty Stuart, Saturday night. They have been touring nationally and pumping life back into Roots music since 2005. The Cavemen spin their music into an aural web that is catchy, profound and playful. Their music has been described as Eccentric Americana, Punk Country, and Ragtime-influenced Neo-Country. However you describe it, there’s no doubt that their high-energy live show gives you good vibes and the kind of buzz that makes dancing and drinking infectious.
