The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) is a Federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools across the United States. The purpose of Junior ROTC is "to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment."
In the tenth grade Allen West joined the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. Congressman West received his Bachelor's degree while on an ROTC scholarship at the University of Tennessee and later went on to get a Master's degree from Kansas State University, both in political science, and entered the United States Army in 1983 when he graduated from the University of Tennessee. Congressman West was the US Army ROTC Instructor of the Year in 1993 and he accredits the JROTC with forming the basis for his life of service and commitment to the nation. He firmly believes that education is the great equalizer and that with a good education any child in America can live his or her dream. To that end the Allen West Foundation was formed as Congressman West’s legacy; to educate, engage and inspire the next generation of conservative leaders.
Awards to be presented for the First Annual JROTC Challenge are: 1st and 2nd place for the Best Team score; and all participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
