The Fish Fry benefits both the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund and the Remember The Miners’ flagship charitable endeavor, the Scholars Program. The Remember The Miners Scholars Program was created in 2011 to provide financial aid to miners, dependents of miners, and students pursuing higher education in the mining industry. Remember The Miners and the West Virginia Coal Foundation created the Scholars Program to support families of the West Virginia mining community. Awardees of the scholarship are miners, dependents of miners, or students pursuing higher education in the mining industry.
“Every year, the Fish Fry brings together West Virginians and coal supporters who understand the importance of sustaining future generations of the industry,” began Jason Parsons, President of Remember The Miners. “Corporate supporters like Little General Stores, a longtime friend to Remember The Miners and our Scholars, show the community that, together, we can honor our state’s legacy of coal mining.”
Honorary Chairman Coach Bob Huggins added: “Both organizations benefitted by this fundraiser are near and dear to my heart, and pay homage to West Virginia’s commitment of caring for its own and creating a better future for West Virginia.”
The Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund at WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center was created by the Huggins family to raise money for cancer research in memory of Huggins’ late mother, Norma Mae.
This year, the Fish Fry moves to Mylan Park at the Hazel and J.W. Ruby Community Center. Mylan Park is a state-of-the-art recreational and educational complex located on over 300 acres of beautifully reclaimed surface-mined property just minutes from downtown Morgantown.
