"These are the future stars in the accounting field, and we get the best researchers in the world to teach them."
Chapel Hill, NC (PRWEB) January 08, 2014
Leading PhD programs are sending their students to the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School to attend the sixth annual UNC Tax Doctoral Seminar Jan. 6-10, 2014.
Top doctoral students from Northwestern, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Columbia, Chicago, Duke, USC, Iowa, Michigan, Washington, MIT, UC-Berkley, Texas, Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Business and Economics in Vienna will learn from the best tax scholars in the United States at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
“These are the future stars in the accounting field, and we get the best tax researchers in the world to teach them,” said Doug Shackelford, the Meade H. Willis Distinguished Professor of Taxation at UNC Kenan-Flagler. He and his colleague Edward Maydew, the David E. Hoffman Distinguished Professor of Accounting, are bringing in faculty from MIT, Wharton and Duke to teach the seminar with them.
The UNC Tax Doctoral Seminar is unique, said Shackelford. “The best PhD programs in the United States send their best students to us for a week, and this year we have two international PhD students. Through our partnership with KPMG LLP and the firm’s generous support, we are able to contribute to the study of taxes for the near- and long-term.”
The seminar exposes students of all backgrounds to current tax research, but it is targeted at non-tax students from doctoral programs without a PhD tax seminar. Students learn the fundamentals of tax research, and some might wind up adding tax to their set of research interests, Shackelford said.
In addition to classes, the PhD students will attend the UNC-Miami basketball game, tour the Carolina and Duke campuses, and dine on N.C. barbecue.
“The seminar has been wildly successful, and a lot of schools would like us to add them to the list,” he said. “We don’t include our own students because they get my course, and this program is about trying to help PhD students at other top schools around the world.”
